Creating content online is more than just promoting yourself and getting people to buy your products or services. Each piece of content you create and share with your online audience is an opportunity to showcase what you’re good at. Whether you’re helping people solve a problem, sharing something personal, or just being you, everything you post builds up (or breaks down) your reputation.
When you have built a reputation and personal brand that holds authority, people trust that you can in fact help them solve a problem. They are then more likely to invest in your product or service ($$, Yes Please!). The quickest and most effective way to build that brand awareness is through your content.
I go weak at the knees for chunky content! What am I talking about? Well, a blog post with 500-800 words or a 5-10 minute video is something I classify as chunky content. This long-form content is usually jam-packed with valuable information that reveals how you work. It shares your expertise on the common problems your ideal clients experience and how you can help solve these problems with your services. It also has many digital marketing advantages like SEO and online indexing.
This is where your content repurposing formula starts. My suggestion is to go live on one of your social media profiles. You can talk about a hot topic or a common problem you see your ideal client struggling with. This has a 2-birds-1-stone effect where you are not only showing up for your audience in a powerful way but you’re literally creating reusable content as you speak.
If you’re not a fan of live video, do the following! Grab your phone, record you talking for 5-10 minutes and then upload it.
Next, take that video and have it transcribed. There are many automated transcription programs online that charge next to nothing for what you need. Once you have the written text of what you said in your video, do some light editing and post that as a blog on your website. BAM! Now you have your chunky content and the rest will all fall into place!
We don’t all consume, learn and understand things in the same way. It is for this reason you can’t assume that everyone loves video or that everyone enjoys reading long-form blog posts. To cater to everyone, the next step in this formula is to create 3 shorter pieces of content (ideal for social media captions) based on the main points you made in your video/ blog post. These shorter posts make it easier for your audience to digest and take in the value you are providing them.
Remember, you are NOT creating new content for this step. You are simply copy-pasting the main points/takeaways of what you spoke about and making it their own. For example, if you are a photographer and you did a blog post explaining how you do family photoshoots, you could break that up into 3 main points; preparation before the shoot, props and poses, and editing/turnaround times.
You may not see yourself as noteworthy but you certainly do have wisdom in your brain. Especially when it comes to your niche and the transformation you help your clients achieve. The most viral posts online come in short bursts of powerful words and phrases just like those of Martin Luther King, Jr. or your favorite lyrics from the new Taylor Swift album. Now it’s time to make your own impact by pulling quotes from your posts.
Again, you are not trying to copy other quotes or create new ones! Simply read through your original bulky content and find a string of words that stand out or make you think “Ooo, that’s good!!!”.
Going back to our photographer example, when talking about props and poses we could have said, “When it comes to families who feel that photoshoots are out of their comfort zone, I let them play and interact as normal because there is confidence in the candid”. A perfect quote to pull from this would be “There Is Confidence In The Candid”. Now do this 5 times and you’re starting to sound like you know your stuff!
Up until now, you have 9 pieces of content using this repurposing formula. To finish things off we are going to create some attention-grabbing visuals. I suggest a minimum of 7 visuals for each piece of chunky content. But you could do so much more than this, time permitting.
Start with two pin designs for Pinterest which can be embedded into the blog as well as shared on Pinterest directly. Next would be two social media graphics, promoting either the blog itself or a cute picture of yourself to go with a caption.
Designing two charming images, each with a quote from your content as an overlay (the ones we just did in the previous step) will encourage your audience to not only save and share your content but also to engage with you.
Lastly, create one video story to invite your audience to read your full blog post or watch your video. This could be a pre-recorded message for Instagram stories. It could also be a simple graphic with a text overlay or it could be a short snippet of your video (as a teaser preview)
That’s how you take 1 piece of content and turn it into 16 (or more)!
If you already have chunky content, great! You are one step closer to vast visibility online. And you get to harness the power of working smarter not harder. This content will build your reputation and personal brand helping you radiate authority that inspires people to invest in your product or service.
